Roller derby is a lot more than just a fast-paced, visually stimulating sport.

According to Marietta-based roller derby league Hades Ladies of H.O.R.D. (Hell’s Orchard Roller Derby) member Wess “the Destroyer” Apshaga-Meaux, it’s the context of the sport within the member’s lives that makes it so special.

“We are all professionals in our own lives, and active in our community, so whenever we can give back to our community with a roller derby event, we do,” he said. In particular, Hades Ladies are dedicated to participating or hosting regional charities as often as possible.

Oct. 22 the group will be doing just that, hosting the “Triple Terror Roller Derby,” their first ever “triple header” event, which will take place at the Washington County Fairgournds, 922 Front St., in Marietta. The Triple Terror Roller Derby kicks off at 2 p.m.

The event, which features the co-ed Hades Ladies team going head to head against the Cleveland Guardians at 3 p.m.; the Hades Ladies against the Gallipolis-based Silver Bridge Bruisers at 5 p.m. and a “fun” co-ed scrimmage at 7 p.m.; will raise funds for Donna Grogg and her family. Grogg, a local woman, is in need of a lung transplant, and proceeds from the event will be used to help her and her family cover the medical expenses associated with that surgery. Donations can also be made here.

Besides thrilling roller derby action, the event will feature delectable pulled pork from Smokin’ Pigs Ash Barbecue, fresh brews, a 50/50 drawing and light-hearted family friendly halftime activities.

Marietta’s Over the Moon Pizzeria will host the event’s after party, which will allow fans to meet and greet with their favorite roller derby ladies and dudes.
