COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The arrest last week of an Ohio man on charges of trying to fly to Libya to join the Islamic State group is one of several extremism cases in the state in the past couple of years.

A former federal prosecutor says investigators work overtime to solve such cases.

Steven Dettelbach was the U.S. attorney in Cleveland from 2009 until earlier this year. He says the FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office have to bat a thousand because even one incident could be devastating.

Columbus defense attorney Sam Shamansky says terrorism prosecutions are no different than other criminal cases, from drugs to homicides.

That means figuring out the client’s goals, examining the facts and determining if the government can prove them.
