Stuart’s Welcomes Bob Boilen, John Paul White, Adam Torres, My Bubba

Stuart’s Opera House has worked with Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication, in partnership with the School of Media Arts & Studies, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, WOUB Public Media, and Arts for OHIO to present this free evening of music and conversation. Boilen will welcome audience members before the show to sign copies of his recent book Your Song Changed My Life. The book signing will start at 7 p.m.
Bob Boilen is the creator and host of NPR Music’s All Songs Considered and Tiny Desk Concert Series, which hosts well-known and emerging artists for intimate performances filmed at his desk. He was also the director of NPR’s All Things Considered (1989-2007). Boilen’s first book, Your Song Changed My Life, was published in April 2016 by HarperCollins. Constantly on the lookout for new music, Boilen sees more than 500 live artists each year.
“Bob is a preeminent voice in the music industry today,” said Josh Antonuccio, a Lecturer in the School of Media Arts & Studies. “With the massive popularity of his Tiny Desk Concerts at NPR and his role as host of All Songs Considered, Bob is one of the nation’s most well-known curators of music. We are thrilled to welcome him to share his insight and passion for music, along with so many talented artists.” In addition to the Stuart’s performance and conversation in the evening, Antonuccio will interview Boilen at Glidden Music Hall on April 14 at 10:30 a.m. The event will be live-streamed at mediaschool.ohio.edu. The two will be joined by acclaimed singer-songwriter John Paul White, formerly of The Civil Wars, as well as the critically-acclaimed Scandinavian duo My Bubba. The event is free and open to the public. Online viewers will be able to ask questions of guests via Twitter by tweeting their question with the hashtag #askoumdia.
Muscle Shoals, AL native John Paul White spent a number of years working as a professional songwriter before finding major success as one half of Americana duo the Civil Wars. That critically and commercially successful partnership would ultimately earn four Grammy Awards and a devoted international fan base. Since disbanding, White has offered a handful of solo tracks, contributing a song to the 2015 season of HBO’s True Detective series and dueting with Emmylou Harris on the song “Kyrie.” Along with Alabama Shakes member Ben Tanner, he launched his own label, Single Lock Records, and became active producing records for others. His second solo effort, Beulah, was released in August.
Austin, TX singer-songwriter Adam Torres released his debut album Nostra Nova while a student at Ohio University. In 2015, Nostra Nova saw a vinyl reissue. Called a “cult classic” by The A.V. Club, the album finally achieved its due, earning additional praise from Stereogum, VICE, Popmatters, All Music Guide, and Flavorwire. Torres was recently signed to Fat Possum records and released the widely-heralded album, Pearls to Swine and toured extensively.
Scandinavian folk duo My Bubba make soft, soulful music which has earned them accolades across musical boundaries. Together, My Larsdotter and Bubba Tomasdottir have toured with Damien Rice, co-written music with Matthew E. White, and recorded with Noah Georgeson. My Bubba’s 2016 album, Big Bad Good, was recorded with Shahzad Ismaily (Will Oldham, Jolie Holland) and the duo has received praise from NPR, The New York Times, as well as being named one of the top 5 acts to breakout from last year’s Americana Fest.
The musical free showcase will begin at 8 p.m. General admission tickets being administered on a first come, first serve basis. Limited advance tickets will first be made available through stuartsoperahouse.org on Monday February 20th, at 10:00 AM. Additional tickets will later be released to Ohio University students and audience members at the campus interview event on the morning of Friday, April 14.
