The Nelsonville Music Festival organizers figured at least a few people would show up for the kickoff night on Thursday, May 17.
The audience numbers were in the hundreds as locals and earlybird campers flocked to the Porch Stage and No-Fi Cabin areas to hear a handful of Athens bands.
"I didn't know if we'd have three or 300 people," said Stuart's Opera House Executive Director Tim Peacock. "We're thrilled with tonight's turnout."
Horse Feathers is one of those bands that is essentially the project of one man. In this case, it's Justin Ringle.
A native of Idaho, the singer/songwriter moved to Portland, Ore., in 2004 and started collaborating with muti-instrumentalist Peter Broderick. The two released Horse Feathers' debut album, Words are Dead, in 2006.
Since Broderick's departure a few years back, Horse Feathers now features a rotating roster of musicians backing up Ringle, with the exception of violinist and string arranger Nathan Crockett who has been a collaborator for four years.
Ohio University's Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium will be filled with the sounds of horns, bass, piano and drums--lots of drums-- during the OU Spring Jazz Concert on Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to performances by the Ohio University Jazz Ensembles I & II and the Jazz Percussion Ensemble, noted percussionist and composer Roland Vazquez will be featured. This is Vazquez’s second visit to Ohio University as a guest of the jazz program.

Seth Riddlebarger and Tim Peacock are no strangers to the Athens music scene. Having played in a myriad of musical acts over the past decade, the pair recently joined forces under the name Hex Net.
"Hex Net is basically made up of Tim and I, and a few other rotating characters," said Riddlebarger, who serves as the band’s front man and guitarist.
