Ohio University will host a Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Baker University Center Ballroom A.

Madafo, a storyteller and musician, will perform during the celebration.

A retired professor and musician died after being hit by a car while crossing Radford Road on Friday.

Richard D. Syracuse, of Athens, was crossing the road at about 9:40 p.m. when a Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Sarah A. Harkins, of Athens, struck him, according to a press release by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Athens post.

Syracuse was pronounced dead at OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital. Harkins did not suffer any injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.

Country music legend Merle Haggard has been booked to appear at the Nelsonville Music Festival in May.

On Friday, Stuart's Opera House made its first round of lineup announcements for the festival, including Haggard.

Others to appear at the festival are art-rock guitar virtuoso St. Vincent and rising Americana act Trampled By Turtles.

The Athens music community was rocked by Sunday's news that a section of West Union Street was consumed by fire, impacting longtime music venues The Union Bar & Grill and Jackie O's Pub & Brewery.

While Jackie O's Brewpub plans to reopen soon, The Union's future is uncertain.

The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College Jazz and Rock Ensembles will host concerts next week, with the Jazz Ensemble performing at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, followed by the Rock Ensemble on Nov. 20.

Indie-pop singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson visited Athens last night as part of her "Lights Out" tour, entertaining an audience of nearly 1,000 at Ohio University's Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Michaelson, perhaps best known for her 2012 album Human Again and singles "The Way I Am" and "Girls Chase Boys," is currently touring in support of her recent album, Lights Out.

The show was presented as part of Ohio University's Performing Arts Series.

Stuart's Opera House welcomes North Carolina country/roots group The Honeycutters this Friday at 8 p.m.

Mountain Xpress describes the band as "old school country in the truest sense, free of twang and 10 gallon hats but full of real emotion, family history, quick wit and strong liquor." 

Since the release of their first album (Irene, 2009), The Honeycutters have performed throughout the U.S., sharing the stage with such Americana giants as Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Donna The Buffalo and The Steep Canyon Rangers.
