At first glance, Donkey Coffee may not seem like the premier spot in Athens to catch fresh beats and sharp rhymes.

This Saturday, several hip-hop dynamos from Columbus plan to shatter that misconception with the UDrop Entertainment Showcase.

"It’s a more intimate setting, closer to the crowd," said UDrop's Terence Robertson.

"It’s like they can actually hear you, can actually understand and feel you. Usually you’re on a stage five or ten feet higher than the audience and they’re all looking up at you, and there isn’t that connection," he added.

Charles Bradley’s break has been a slow train coming.

The 63 year-old soul singer has been performing for audiences for over 40 years--the last 20 as a James Brown impersonator under the stage name "Black Velvet."

Performing day-in and day-out in New York City nightclubs to scratch out living, Bradley’s extraordinary talent and soul was finally recognized by Gabriel Roth, co-founder of Daptone Records.

Last summer, Stuart's Opera House closed its outdoor concert series with a stellar performance by the Brooklyn, N.Y., retro-country ensemble the Sweetback Sisters.

The band returns to our region with a performance at ARTS/West in Athens on Wednesday, April 25.

Zara Bode and Emily Miller are a pseudo-sister, close-harmony duo, influenced by the great sibling and family singing groups of the 1930s through the '60s, with a heavy dose of the legendary Davis Sisters.

WOUB student photographer Sydney Good captured the orchestral folk-rock band The Ridges during a special in-store performance at Haffa's Records on April 21.

The band was promoting their Record Store Day single "The Insomniac's Song (Live With The Sleepless Singers)," an Ohio-exclusive release sold at record stores in Athens, Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland.

It's hard to say what Barry (Jack Black's cantankerous character in High Fidelity) would think of The Ridges, but it's a good bet he'd admire the band's love of Record Store Day.

The local orchestral folk-rock band will give an in-store acoustic performance this Saturday at Haffa's Records, and singer-songwriter Victor Rasgaitis is looking forward to it.

When the experimental pioneers of Sonic Youth are discussed amongst circles of like-minded alternative music fans, the discussion is often dominated by the names Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon.

However, guitarist/vocalist Lee Ranaldo is responsible for some of Sonic Youth's most beautifully constructed and classic swirling compositions, such as "Eric’s Trip" from Daydream Nation (1988) and "Karen Revisited" from Murray Street (2002).

If there was one thought that kept running through my mind at the Wild Flag concert on Thursday, April 5 at the Metro, it was this:

This is the life force

I'd been feeling a bit beat going into the evening. Not quite ready to hang up my rock & roll shoes for the night, but maybe propping them up on something.

By the time the show was over, I was exhilarated, carried out of the hall on a high--aching feet forgotten. My overwhelming feeling was: Now that keeps you young.

Just as scores of movie buffs are heading uptown Athens this weekend for the film festival, an equally excited group of music fans will converge just around the corner on West Union Street for the 17th annual Blackoutfest.

Nearly 30 bands will take The Union's stage, featuring a wide variety of local, regional, national and international acts.

What started out as a birthday party for a few local musicians has grown in reputation--and in the number of bands.
