Ohio University's second annual "Oktoboefest" is dedicated to an instrument that many consider to be unusual: The oboe.

Join the OU School of Music on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. for oboe recitals featuring faculty member Michele Fiala and special guest artist Dwight Parry of the Cincinnati Symphony.

The music varies from the uplifting to the haunting, all with a connection to the Halloween season.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit will be the first act to play at Ohio University Lancaster’s Wagner Theatre as part of an expanded relationship between the Lancaster Festival and the Lancaster Campus.

"We are pleased to have Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit as the first artist presented in this new collaboration with the University," said Lancaster Festival Executive Director Lou Ross. "Already known as a member of the band Drive By Truckers, Jason is now forging his own identity, recently winning the 2012 Song of the Year award from the Americana Music Association."

On Saturday, Sept. 22, local singer-songwriter Jesse James Russell performed two sets of original music at Insea Sound Shop in Nelsonville, Ohio, as part of the monthly Blue Room Sessions concert series.

On the third Saturday of each month, Insea Sound Shop owner Nick Collura presents a live showcase of local and regional talent at the shop's recording studio.

Raucous roots-swing duo The Two Man Gentlemen Band returns to Athens this Wednesday. 

Tenor guitarist, banjoist and singer Andy Bean and bassist Fuller Condon have been touring the country for about six years, winning hearts and minds.

Stuart's Opera House's Free Summer Concert Series came to a close on Friday, Sept. 28 with a performance by Athens' own Southeast Engine.

As the sun set on Nelsonville's Public Square, the band added to the eerie, yet exciting, atmosphere with its sometimes-dark, Apppalachian-tinged folk-rock.
