64 new COVID-19 cases reported in Athens County from Jan. 12-19

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 19,478 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 64 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Jan. 19, 2023.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 14 people 0-19, 11 people 20-29, 10 people 70-79, seven people 50-59, seven people 60-69, six people 30-39, five people 40-49 and four people 80+.

There are 213 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 19,109 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 54.07% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.40% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,287 first boosters and 9,328 second boosters and 9,183 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 7,961 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 434 hospitalizations, 27 ICU admissions and 110 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
