Tips on Using Books with Infants and Toddlers
Create comfortable reading corners.
Provide bean bags and pillows so that children have a cozy place to enjoy their favorite picture books. Make sure the books are easy to reach for small hands.
Place books in safe areas around the house/classroom.
Put books about shapes and colors in the block play area or books with instruments in the music area.
Enjoy shared reading
Allow children to "read" along with you. Have them tell you about the pictures they see or what is happening in the story.
Read several times throughout the day
Purchase age appropriate books
Allow children to choose their own books, and browse at their own pace.
Provide a variety of books and supporting materials
Don't forget that flannel boards and puppets can help children develop language skills.
Display projects for all to see.
Children take pride in their work especially when it is put out for all to see. Children will begin to see how adults value reading, writing and their overall efforts.
