It's hard to believe that it began more than 30 years ago. But that's how long Keith Newman has been hosting Below the Salt on WOUB Radio.
It started when WOUB's AM programming director needed someone to fill in a shift early Sunday morning, a notoriously difficult time to get radio announcers - especially Ohio University students, to volunteer for. She found the perfect person in Keith, a lifelong radio fan who had an extensive and eclectic personal music collection.
The rest, as they say, is history. Filling a void on the generally uninteresting Sunday morning radio dial, Keith's show quickly gained a following. It wasn't long before WOUB asked Keith to move to the much more powerful FM station, where he began broadcasting to listeners throughout southeastern Ohio and neighboring areas of West Virginia.
And so began a familiar routine for thousands of WOUB listeners -- coffee, breakfast or brunch, the Sunday newspaper ... and Below the Salt. The program has evolved from a folk and Celtic show to include many genres of music, now incorporated into hour-long themes, with Keith's inimitable commentary.
There are, of course, frequent favorites -- Below the Salt Goes to the Movies, around the Academy Awards, holiday specials and perhaps the most popular, Keith's annual baseball show.
For those of you have stumbled upon this page you might be wondering "What the heck is BELOW THE SALT anyway?" Well, it's a radio show! That's the simple part, describing the format takes a bit more explanation [see FAQ's].
Of course the best way to figure out the program is to give it a listen!
Don't forget that Below the Salt is being re-broadcast during the week as part of WOUB's 24 hour service. Catch a replay of each week's show each Thursday morning from 2 -5 a.m. EDT.
