Dr. Michelle Ferrier, associate dean for innovation at the Scripps College of Communication, recently led a team of women to the top award at International Women’s Media Foundation Summit and Hackathon in New York City.

They developed a new tool called TrollBusters to help women journalists and bloggers fend off cyber bullying and other misogynistic attacks online.

The new system helps women who are attacked online  to be equipped with counter-measures such as reputation management, support from other women, and linkages to legal counsel and other experts who can help.

Pauline Frederick was a broadcasting pioneer. She was the first woman to be heard as a reporter for network radio in the late 1940s as she covered the Nuremburg trials of Nazi war criminals.

She was the first woman reporter to appear on network television covering the 1952 political conventions and her career in broadcasting spanned over three decades. She covered the founding of the United Nations, Fidel Castro’s first trip to the United States, the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis among other major events.

Ira Flatow, the host and executive editor of Science Friday on NPR and WOUB radio, visits Ohio University this week to talk about “Communicating Science to a Science Challenged World.”

He will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. in Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium as part of the Kennedy Lecture Series.

Flatow’s career dates back to 1969 and he has spent over four decades as an award winning television and radio host of science oriented programming.  He also is an author of several books.
