While most police departments work around the clock, public business in Ironton is only conducted on Wednesdays.

City budget cuts forced the Ironton Police Department to go from five office staffers to none at all.

Ironton police officers still patrol and answer calls seven days and nights a week, but people can only get reports and records in person on Wednesdays.

The police department's vehicle towing and storage tickets and rummage sale permits were farmed out to the city finance department.

Police Chief Jim Carey, who also works as the front desk secretary, says he's making do as best he can, but he is hearing complaints from residents.

Carey says Ironton City Council is considering bringing one police officer back on the job.
