COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Supporters say Ohio has shown residents and the nation it’s serious about operating quality charter schools with committee passage of a major overhaul of accountability, performance and reporting standards.

A bill that cleared a compromise committee unanimously Tuesday heads to the full Legislature on Wednesday.

The legislation takes aim at poor-performing schools and low-rated operators, requires more thorough reporting and gives access to financial and attendance records to state officials and the public.

It also clarifies that charter school operators’ purchases of computers, textbooks and other equipment with tax dollars are property of the schools, not the operators.

The vote follows the forced resignation of Ohio’s School Choice director in July that increased concern surrounding implementation of a $71 million federal grant Ohio received last week.
