Cleveland has jumped another hurdle in the bid to bring the 2016 Republican National Convention to Ohio. The Republican Party named the city one of two finalists.

The Republican National Committee dropped Kansas City and Denver from the list of contenders, leaving only Dallas and Cleveland.

The GOP made the announcement on its website. It didn’t explain why Cleveland was moving ahead, but only said the two remaining cities could “provide our next presidential nominee a launching pad that will put a Republican in the White House.”

Earlier this month Northeast Ohio’s political and business leaders gave Republicans a tour of the region – hosting dinners, driving a motorcade through town and setting up Quicken Loans Arena for a mock convention.

The GOP has been whittling down the list of contenders, though it’s not clear when exactly they’ll settle on their 2016 destination. Cleveland is also in the running for the Democratic convention.
