After receiving its second loss of the season to Vinton County, Eastern coach John Burdette said his team needed to execute its offense and play better defense. The Lady Eagles did just that this past week as they went 3-0, including a game they won by 41 points.

Two of the wins were against Belpre and River Valley. Their most impressive win came on Saturday against a rebuilding Wahama where the Lady Eagles cruised to a 47-6 victory over the White Falcons on Dec. 19.

“They’re trying to get that program going,” Burdette said of the Wahama game. “It just worked out for us that way.”

With such a big lead throughout the game the Lady Eagles were able to work on the smaller things. The offense worked on plays they had trouble with so far during the season, while the defense did their part by holding Wahama to six points.

The defense also did their part during their 45-34 win over River Valley on Dec. 17.

“We played really good defense the first half,” Burdette said.

With the defense clicking the offense was able to wear the Lady Raiders down the second half. Eastern took good shots and was able to keep a sizeable lead throughout the game.

“We worked the ball around,” Burdette added. “We took a lot better shots than what we have been.”

The first win of the week came on Dec. 14 when the Lady Eagles took on the Lady Golden Eagles of Belpre. Despite Coach Burdette feeling that the Vinton County game was one of the better games the Lady Eagles played so far, the team still suffered its second loss of the season and felt the need to respond with a victory.

Coach Burdette noted that ball discipline was a problem in the first half of the Belpre game. After talking it over during half time the Lady Eagles came out in the second half and stepped up their game.

“I think everybody was just playing better,” Burdette said. “We started playing better our second half, we worked better as a team. That’s what we’re going to have to do to get better as a team,” Burdette added.

Eastern hopes to carry the momentum this week, when the Lady Eagles host two tough teams. First undefeated Waterford comes on Dec. 21. Then two days later, St. Joe pays the Eagles Nest a visit.
