Fire officials have classified the structure fire of a 10-bedroom house on Stewart Street in Athens that occurred early Sunday morning as “suspicious” in nature.

Firefighters responded to 68 Stewart St. at 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning and were on scene until around 5:30 a.m. trying to douse the flames. An estimated $225,000 in damages were caused in addition to another $5,000 in damages to personal effects.

Several Ohio University students were reportedly displaced due to the blaze but none were believed to be home at the time and no one was injured in the fire, according to Lt. Charles Adams of the Athens Fire Department.

Adams was unable to provide many details about the fire since the incident is still under investigation. Matt Mullins, spokesman with the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office, could only add that the cause of the fire was undetermined and reiterated that the case is under investigation.

Ohio University Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones tweeted Sunday morning that she had stopped by the house and that she would reach out to the students to provide support.
