A winter storm warning has been replaced with a rarely issued ice storm warning for some counties in Southeast Ohio.

Hocking, Pike, Ross and Scioto Counties as well as Adams, Brown Clermont, Hamilton and Highland Counties are listed in the warning area.

The warning was posted for 4 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The weather event calls for heavy ice accumulation with some snow and sleet accumulating too.

As much as half an inch of ice and 4 inches of sleet may accumulate.

The wintry precipitation is expected to quickly overspread the region late Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is expecting the rapid build up of ice in the affected areas to turn roads and sidewalks into a sheet of ice.

The warning urges those in the area to pack a flashlight and extra food and water if traveling during the period.

A brief window in the stunning winter weather is expected through most of Tuesday before the next round hits in the afternoon.

For Athens and counties to the south, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from sleet and freezing rain beginning at 5 p.m. and continuing through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Counties to the north and west are under a winter weather warning with 4 to 6 inches of snow expected.

While less snow is forecast for Athens and points south, ice is expected to be of the most concern.

Sleet, freezing rain and ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch expected as well as snow accumulations of up to one inch forecast.

All that is expected to cause roads to become slick especially on untreated surfaces.

In addition to the winter weather advisory a flood watch remains in effect for the region as a combination of soggy surface soil over a frozen subsurface, snow pack and still-frozen streams may not readily accept the rain and snow expected to fall Tuesday evening.

Athens, Nelsonville-York, and Trimble schools were operating on a two-hour delay Tuesday.

Athens, Perry and Pike Counties were still under a level one snow emergency following Monday's 5 to 7 inches of snow.

Jackson and Vinton remained under a level two snow emergency Tuesday morning.

Waverly City Schools in Pike County were closed again Tuesday causing concerns for parents and educators as students have been in class just twice in the last two weeks.
