On this edition of Conversations from Studio B, host Jenny Nelson talks with Ali Ziyati about Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

Regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Ramadan is observed through a month of fasting in which adult Muslims must reframe from eating, drinking and smoking between sunrise and sunset.

Nelson and Ziyati discuss the history and importance behind Ramadan to the Muslim faith, as well as many of the traditions involved, including the memorization and recitation of the Quran and post Ramadan celebrations.

“Ramadan is a moment when Muslims around the world actually pause and rethink their closeness to God and what it takes to be a good Muslim. In addition to fasting – there is a lot more to it than no food or drink or anything. There are a whole lot of activities – social activities with neighbors, charity, prayer, reading the Quran and so forth”, says Ziyati.
