CIRCLEVILLE — Circleville police are investigating threats and an unidentified substance sent to the offices of the local newspaper.
Police say a suspicious letter was sent to the offices of the Circleville Herald on Thursday, according to a Facebook post and media release by the Circleville police. The letter reportedly contained “threats of physical harm” toward the Herald staff.

The letter claimed it was also laced with the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl.

“The letter also contained additional information that appeared to be threats towards other Pickaway County residents,” the Facebook post stated.

A substance was found in the envelope, but a HAZMAT team took possession of the substance for lab testing. The Circleville Police Department is still investigating the incident.

Newsrooms have been on high alert after a man with a shotgun killed five employees of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 28.
