Ohio veterans may soon have better access to benefits if a bill headed to Ohio Senate passes.

The Ohio House of Representatives approved House Bill 490, which would allow county veteran service officers access training and certification to access discharge forms, called DD-214s.

State Representative Andy Thompson (R-Marietta) says this would make it easier for honorably discharged veterans to receive the benefits they deserve.  Thompson says the training for county veteran service officers would also curtail the number of fraudulent discharge forms circulating.

The bill would also allow the spouse or children of a deceased veteran to be eligible for in-state tuition if they live in Ohio on their first day of enrollment.

The bill now goes to the state senate for review.
