A year ago the Williamstown Yellow Jackets conjured up a 9-3 record and a respectable playoff run in the West Virginia Single A State Tournament. It’s high school football time once again, and Coach Terry Smith and his Yellow Jackets are looking to build on their 2010 campaign. “The 2010 season looked good on paper, but as a team we could’ve done a lot better. You never want to lose to a team twice in a season, and that’s what happened to us against Wirt County. We have to work on the little things”, Smith explained.

The Yellow Jackets graduated two of their most reliable offensive weapons from a year ago in running back Matt Hendrickson, and quarterback Lane Knost.  As if that wasn’t enough they played both sides of the ball creating gaps on both offense and defense. Even with key departures Williamstown will have five returning starters on both sides of the ball, giving Coach Smith a solid core of experienced players to put on the field on Friday nights. One who stands out is tight end and inside linebacker Aaron Jones, who is expected to step up defensively.

“Aaron is going to be our force inside defensively, and we need him to anchor the middle of our 4-4 defense”, said Smith. Offensively the Yellow Jackets are looking to a couple of underclassmen to carry the load in quarterback Jake Tracewell and tailback Tre King. “Jake started JV quarterback for us, and as far as replacing Lane [Knost] at quarterback, he’s at the head of the pack, he’s going to be there for us during the season” After last season the expectations will be high this fall for Coach Smith and his Yellow Jackets, and knowing Coach Smith those expectations will be met, it’s just how far he and his boys can exceed them.
