Soccer: ‘Cats earn disappointing draw with Buffalo

The Bobcats battled out their first MAC matchup of the weekend today at Chessa Field. Despite the rainy conditions in days past, the field remained playable for the game. Ohio took the game to their fifth overtime of the season, only to have the score result in a 1-1 tie against the Buffalo Bulls.
The first half was full of opportunities for both the Bulls and the Bobcats, but nobody was able to capitalize. The Bobcats had two free kick opportunities in the first 45 minutes. Kelsey Pichel took the first kick, firing it just over the crossbar. The second ball was played to Toye Famodu in the box, but was also struck just over the top of the goal.
The ball found the net for the first time in the 55th minute of the game, in favor of Ohio. Erin Schwenke recorded her second goal of the season. The game remained scoreless until the last few minutes of the game when Buffalo’s own Megan Giesen headed the ball just outside of Amari’s reach to tie it up 1-1.
The game went on to double-overtime, but the teams couldn’t convert, leaving 1-1 to be the final score.
The draw, coupled with a Kent State win over Akron, means Ohio still controls its own destiny in the Eastern Division, but needs a winning result when it plays KSU on Sunday.
On top of it being an important MAC matchup, it was Senior Day. During halftime, all eight seniors were honored for their performances on and off the field.
After today’s game Ohio is 7-8-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the MAC. Their matchup against Kent State this Sunday will be one of the most important matches of the season.
