Ohioans who receive Food Assistance may soon see a small reduction in the amount of their benefits.

This change is due to a government recalculation triggered by lower natural gas prices in Ohio in the last year.

Athens County Job and Family Services Director Jack Frech says, "We are discouraged by this."

He says, "Many of our clients use electricity, bottled gas, fuel oils, wood or other sources to heat their homes, and they have not been affected by the scaling back of natural gas prices."

He says in addition, this decrease in food assistance benefits "does not take into account the increase in electricity rates in Ohio."

He goes on to say, "Low income families can't afford any reductions in their benefits."
