Ohio defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 8-3 on the road this afternoon thanks to a strong final three innings from the Bobcats' bats.

The game was tied entering the seventh when Ohio (19-17, 8-4 MAC) scored one run to take the lead, followed by a three run eighth to close the door on Youngstown State (4-31).

Ohio did its eighth inning damage with two outs. Douglas Holmes singled to center to get things rolling and later scored off of an Ethan Newton RBI single. Tyler Wells followed with a double to left field, advancing Newton to third base. The heavy-hitting Jensen Painter brought Newton home with a two-run double to put Ohio up 7-3.

The Bobcats tacked on one more run in the ninth when Ethan Newton, who went 2-4, hit his second RBI single of the game. Ohio jumped out early with one run in the first thanks to a Tyler Wells double. Catcher Cody Gaertner hit a two-run home run in the fourth to put the Bobcats up 3-0.

Starting Pitcher Tyler Backstrom pitched three strong innings before YSU got to him in the fourth. The Penguins scored one run in the fourth and the fifth against Backstrom before Coach Carbone turned to his bullpen.

Shane Henkel closed out the fifth for Ohio and Sean Kennedy entered the game in the sixth. Kennedy gave up one run in the sixth as YSU tied the score at three. However, thanks to Ohio’s late offensive boost, Kennedy (3-0) picked up the win.

Brad Smith took the loss for the Penguins after pitching just a third of an inning and walking two Bobcats.

Ohio plays host to MAC opponent Buffalo this weekend.
