Eastern Michigan Defeats Ohio in First Swim Meet of the Season

The Eastern Michigan Eagles handed the Ohio Bobcats a season-opening defeat on Saturday at the Ohio University Aquatic Center after winning the last six events of the meet to finish with a 168-132 score on the afternoon.

Ohio’s 200 Medley Relay team of Rachel Stearns, Anastasia Bocharnikova, Addison Ferguson and Lauren Funk started off strong taking a first-place finish with a time of 1:46.46. Eastern Michigan came in second with a time of 1:47.55.

Eastern Michigan’s Briana Emig dominated in the next two events, taking first-place in both. Emig earned a time of 10:22.15 in the 1000 Freestyle, beating out teammate Audra Burtch. Haley Clark was the top finisher for the Bobcats, finishing fourth with a time of 10:40.26.

Emig posted a time of 1:51.04 in the 200 Freestyle. Ohio’s Stephanie Gyurke finished with a time of 1:56.41, earning fourth-place.

Stearns earned another first-place, this time it was in the 100 Backstroke, with a time of 57.14, just .58 seconds ahead of teammate Addy Ferguson.

Bocharnikova was the top performer in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.45. Irene Llorente finished second for the Eagles, posting a 1:06.92.

In the 200 Butterfly, the Eagles took the top three positions with Jessie Godlewski (2:02.78), Jackie Swartz (2:05.42), and Clarice Daniel (2:07.14) leading the way.

Bobcats Lauren Funk and Katey Brooks sprinted to first and second place finishes in the 50 Freestyle. Funk earned a 23.77 time to lead the way.

Morgan Srail earned a 308.25 in the Three Meter Diving competition, almost 25 points higher than the second-place finish by Kelly Hendricks of Eastern Michigan.

Brooks and Funk took the top two finishes again in the 100 Freestyle, with Brooks tapping the wall at 52.77 seconds, out-touching Funk by just .04 seconds.

Stearns finished her day of three first-place finishes with the 200 Backstroke, clocking in at 2:03.69.

Eastern Michigan went on to win the final six events, starting with Monica Dorszewski in the 200 Breaststroke. Llorente finished second for the Eagles.

Emig coasted to a 4:58.78 finish in the 500 Freestyle, giving her a third first-place finish on the afternoon.

Swartz took top rank in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 56.59, beating out Ohio’s Ferguson for first. Swartz went on to also win the 200 Individual Medley.

Danielle Hulvey earned a score of 317.02 to take top honors in the One Meter Diving contest. Srail took second for the Bobcats with a 291.98 score.

The Eagles finished the day with a first place in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:30.78), beating Ohio’s team of Funk, Bocharnikova, Brooks and Michelle Gasior (3:31.25).

Ohio will next be in action on Saturday, Nov. 10. Ohio will host No. 14 Ohio State in their second dual meet of the 2012-13 season. The first event is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
