29 COVID-19 Cases Confirmed in Athens County For December 31

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 3,101 total cases of COVID-19 after 29 new cases were reported Thursday. One case remains uncategorized in an age group.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the new cases on December 31. The agency also reported that no data will be released on New Year’s Day. The case numbers announced on January 2, 2021, will include the Friday, January 1, 2021 data.

An analysis of ODH data finds the cases involved: one person aged 0-19, eight people aged 20-29, four people aged 30-39, two people aged 40-49, three people aged 50-59, five people aged 60-69, three people aged 70-79 and three people 80 or older.

One person aged 80 or over had to be hospitalized. To date, 126 Athens County residents have had to be hospitalized because of COVID-19.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 700,380 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide after 9,632 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. There have been 38,334 hospitalizations and 8,8962 reported deaths since the start of the pandemic.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
