Rio Grande freshmen Laurel Amstutz and Carrie Mathes scored four times apiece, while freshman Brooke Keipper and sophomore Kasey Crow scored twice each in a 16-0 win over Kentucky Christian University Wednesday evening.

With the astounding score, the RedStorm improved to a 3-2 overall record, and broke the school’s single-game record for goals in a match. Freshman Melissa Dickerson added a goal and three assists to the books, while Keipper and Hannah Brindle had two assists apiece.

Up until game five, Rio had just five goals on the season. Wednesday night, the RedStorm had doubled that total by halftime and were up 10-0.

Junior Karla Garn got the game going off an assist from senior Mary Beth Schramm at 14:41 mark. After that, Mathes scored three straight times over the next ten minutes. Amstutz took over and scored the next four out of five goals to make it 9-0. Sophomore Courtney Young interrupted Mathes’s scoring blitz to give the RedStorm the 10-0 halftime lead.

“We had a few girls that got onto the scoresheet, so maybe this will help their confidence,” Rio coach Callum Morris said. “It would be nice if we could carry some of this over to Saturday night, but we will have our hands full.”

Crow immediately had the first two goals of the second half, while Keipper captured the final two markers of the contest. Freshman Carli Henman and Dickerson found the open spot in the net in between Crow’s and Keipper’s efforts.

Rio finished the game with a 34-2 edge in shots. Junior goalkeeper Allison Keeney finished with one save, marking her second shutout victory of the season.

Rio returns to action on Saturday as they host University of Northwestern Ohio. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
