Update: Boston College has hired Ohio's Jim Christian as its new men's basketball coach, via Jason Arkley of the Athens Messenger.

Ohio commit Tariq Owens plans to ask Ohio for a release from his Letter of Intent, his AAU coach told Evan Daniels of Hoops Recruiting. WOUB attempted to reach Baltimore's Finest, and left a message on the program's voicemail.

The report comes after Ohio head coach Jim Christian has been linked to the Boston College head coaching position. Daniels also tweeted, "According to Tariq Owens' coach Dwayne Wise, Jim Christian and Owens communicated while he was in meetings in Boston."

WOUB contacted Owens, and he said that Christian possibly leaving the program was the reason behind him asking for the release of his Letter of Intent. He also confirmed that he and Christian spoke, but Christian "did not for sure say if he was leaving or not."

The 6-foot-9 forward is a four-star recruit and is ranked in the top 100 by Scout.com. Owens was ranked as the No. 21 power forward in the Class of 2014 and 99th best overall prospect.

He signed with the Bobcats in November. Owens also had offers from Georgetown, Miami (FL), VCU and Temple.
