An Ohio effort to require billions of dollars in state investment in alternative energy has cleared another hurdle.

The state Ballot Board on Monday ruled the Ohio Clean Energy Initiative's constitutional amendment as a single issue. It's the fourth such petition submitted under the same title since 2012.

The amendment calls for $1.3 billion in annual investments over a decade in infrastructure, research and development related to solar, wind and other energy sources.

Backers can now begin collecting the more than 385,000 signatures required to get the latest version before voters.  It's too late for supporters to make the ballot this November, though they can try for other elections.
