Transportation officials are spending $1.5 million to scrape the rock face of a cliff along a state highway in Muskingum County to keep rocks from falling onto the roadway.

The rock face on the eastern wall of Route 60 in the Zanesville area hugs the road closely on one side, with the Muskingum River on the other.

Contractors are scraping away a larger shoulder to put more distance between traffic and the rock face. They'll also drape the heavy top layer with a metal fence and shield the road from falling debris with an earthen wall.

Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Faulkner says it's a statewide problem. Drivers pass more than 6,000 rock slopes on state-maintained roadways throughout Ohio.
