Several Cuyahoga County employees have been disciplined for lacking valid driver's licenses while the county's executive lacked a permanent one for years.

Records show Democrat Ed FitzGerald's administration punished at least eight employees in 2013, with penalties ranging from a written reprimand to a five-day suspension without pay. The news group obtained the documents through a public records request.

FitzGerald is running for Ohio governor. News of the workers' discipline comes as he's been on the defensive about why he lacked a permanent driver's license for about a decade, from 2002 to 2012. He had temporary permits starting in 2008, but he lacked one for more than a year until he got a permanent license.

FitzGerald has apologized for the lapse.
