The South Gallia Rebels (3-2, 2-1) overcame numerous turnovers and took to the ground against the Eastern Eagles (2-3, 2-1) to grinded their way to a 28-18 victory Friday night.

Both teams traded possessions until late in the first quarter when Eastern’s Tyler Morris picked off South Gallia quarterback Landon Hutchinson deep in Eagles territory. On the second play of the ensuing drive, Jett Facemeyer rolled out and connected with Christian Speelman, who promptly ran it 80 yards up the sideline for the score.

The 6-0 lead lasted less than 10 seconds.

On the ensuing kickoff, after an initial fumble, Hutchinson picked up the loose ball and took it 96 yards to the house, evening up the score at 6-6 late in the first. However, the theme of the evening was turnovers.

The teams combined for a total of five turnovers in the first half alone. The game’s most significant turnover, committed by Eastern, came midway through the second quarter. Christian Speelman, after scoring an 80-yard touchdown, picked off the ball with one hand and powered the ball 63 yards for the score, giving the Eagles a 12-6 lead that lasted until halftime.

The Rebels took a 14-12 lead early in the second half and did not look back.

The option-heavy South Gallia offense gave Eastern’s defense fits all nigh long. Facemeyer finished with 199 all-purpose yards and threw two touchdowns to Speelman, who totaled 110 receiving yards on the night.

Landon Hutchinson finished 5-11 for 64 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Dakota Wroten rushed for 97 yards on 17 carries.

The Eagles will look to rebound next Friday against the Waterford Wildcats (1-4, 1-2 TVC-Hocking) on the road. South Gallia will face the Belpre Golden Eagles (3-2, 2-1 TVC-Hocking) at home.
