REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (AP) – Ohio will soon begin aerial treatments to control gypsy moths in several southern Ohio counties.

Gypsy moths are invasive insects that defoliate over 300 species of trees and shrubs. In the caterpillar stage, the moth feeds on leaves of trees and shrubs and is especially fond of oak.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture says it will begin spraying more than 2,000 acres in Athens, Hocking, Pickaway, Ross, Vinton and Clermont counties this month. Treatments are sprayed from low-flying aircraft just above the tops of trees.

Agriculture officials say more than 3,700 acres in 14 counties will eventually receive treatments to control the moths at the caterpillar stage. Fifty-one Ohio counties are under quarantine regulations for gypsy moths

The department says the treatments aren’t toxic to humans, pets, birds or fish.
