The Home Away From Home agency of Logan and the North Market Street House in McArthur have combined their efforts to create a variety of artwork that will be displayed at The Bowen House, Logan’s Cultural Arts Center and Educational Center, 196 N. Market St., Logan.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by a concert on the lawn by Persuaded, who will be performing southern gospel music at 7:15 p.m.

The second annual member artist showcase is being sponsored by Integrated Services of Appalachian Ohio. The exhibit will run through June 15.

Kim Jackson, Hocking and Vinton County coordinator for the Home Away From Home and North Market Street House organizations, said the exhibit will include original artworks created by 15 of the clients who are associated with the organizations.

“The exhibit will include paintings, drawings, handmade jewelry, as well as items created from fabric including a colorful quilted wall hanging, pillows and handbags,” Jackson said.

The coordinator said that she is proud of the fact that most of the supplies and materials used to create the artwork were donated or are derived from recycled products.

“People donated fabric for the wall-hanging, purses and handbags, while many of the paint supplies were donated as well. The clients simply created their artworks from their own imaginations, and I believe the public will be impressed with their artistic talents,” she added.

The Home Away From Home and North Market Street establishments are designed to provide a safe and supportive voluntary drop-in program for residents in Hocking and Vinton Counties living with severe and persistent mental illness to create positive peer relationships through special activities, as well as focusing on art and food programs.

Beth Daubenmire of Logan is one of the local residents who enjoy visiting the Home Away From Home facility on a regular basis. “I have made a lot of friends throughout the years at Home Away From Home. I really like all of the people and try and help them in any way I can or by providing transportation if needed,” she said.

Jackson said that the clients associated with Home Away From Home and North Market Street House get together frequently for outings and activities. “We are like one big family – so it just made sense to have both groups featured in the exhibit. I must say that Beth is the heartbeat of our family – she is really special,” Jackson added.

Dani Bell, event coordinator at The Bowen House, welcomes everyone to attend opening night of the exhibit and encourages folks to stay for the Persuaded concert as well. She noted that refreshments will be served during the exhibit and that The Bowen House concession stand will be open during the concert.

“Both events are free of charge but donations are accepted at the concert to assist with future events offered at The Bowen House,” she explained.
