CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The state Public Service Commission will hold the last of nine public hearings on West Virginia American Water Company’s $35 million rate increase request.

The last of the public hearings is set for Monday night at the PSC’s office in Charleston. The PSC is holding an evidentiary hearing on the rate request starting Tuesday.

If approved, average monthly residential bills would increase by 28 percent, or nearly $12.

West Virginia American Water says it needs the rate increase to pay for $105 million in system improvements since 2012 and $98 million in projects planned through February 2017.
