ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) – A sheriff says a deputy fatally shot an armed man during a standoff at a house in eastern Ohio.

The Muskingum County sheriff’s office says deputies were called around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a woman reported a man with a gun threatening her and her children. The woman later said he had taken her children hostage and was firing a gun.

Authorities say the woman and children escaped uninjured. Deputies say the man remained inside, telling a sheriff’s negotiator by phone that he was going to “commit suicide by cop.”

Authorities say that around midnight the suspect pointed a gun at deputies from a window. They say a deputy shot the man, who died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office didn’t immediately identify the suspect. The investigation was continuing Monday.
