FREMONT, Ohio (AP) – A northern Ohio sheriff has pleaded not guilty to charges that include illegally obtaining prescription drugs and misusing department funds.

A judge on Wednesday set bond for Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer at $150,000.

Overmyer was in handcuffs and wearing an orange jail uniform when deputies led him into court.

A grand jury indicted him on 43 counts Tuesday, including misusing department money and tampering with records.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been investigating Overmyer for nearly a year. State investigators say he took medications from prescription drug disposal drop boxes and deceived physicians and pharmacists to obtain prescription pain medication.

Overmyer told The News-Messenger in Fremont earlier this year that he’d done nothing wrong and that he passed a drug test conducted by state investigators.
