The School of Art and Design proudly presents the exhibition “The Rotten Portfolio,” on view Aug. 23 through Sept. 3 in the Trisolini Gallery, with an exhibition reception Thursday, Sept. 1, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This printmaking exchange features the work of 18 undergraduate students from four strong printmaking programs in the state of Ohio: Ohio University, Bowling Green State University, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and The University of Akron. The exchange was designed and organized by Associate Professor Melissa Haviland’s senior printmaking students during the 2016 spring semester and is an interesting look into advanced undergraduate printmaking work from around the state.

In designing this printmaking exhibition, students focused on the definition of the term ‘rotten’ as provided below:
rotten |ˈrätn|; adjective (rottener, rottenest)
Suffering from decay: rotten eggs | the supporting beams were rotten.
• morally, socially, or politically corrupt: he believed that the whole art business was rotten.
• informal very bad: she was a rotten cook.
• informal extremely unpleasant: it’s rotten for you having to cope on your own.
• [predic.] informal unwell: she tried to tell me she felt rotten.
adverb informal: To an extreme degree; very much: your mother said that I spoiled you rotten.

The word ‘rotten’ broadly encompasses the breaking down of materials as well as the corruption of moral, social, and political practices of society. The idea arose from the student’s desire to convey their surroundings authentically with an eye for human ecological impacts as well as the transformation of environments and objects over time.

The Trisolini Gallery is located on the fourth floor of Baker Center, 1 University Drive on the campus of Ohio University.  Regular gallery hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m.
