FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security says the latest sale of confiscated weapons has generated $104,392 in grants for law enforcement supplies.

The money will be used to buy body armor, service weapons, ammunition and stun guns for Kentucky departments on tight budgets.

One of the 26 grants awarded this cycle will be used to purchase 14 body armor vests for the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. A release from homeland security says the county could not afford the equipment and would have had to reduce daily patrols to make the purchase. The grant total for the county is $9,310.

Weapons confiscated by law enforcement are sold by state police to firearms dealers at public auction. The sale proceeds are awarded to city, county, public university, sheriff’s and school district law enforcement officers.
