OBETZ, Ohio (AP) – A central Ohio village plans to spend $15 million to demolish the now-closed Columbus Motor Speedway and build a 6,500-seat athletic stadium on the site.

The Columbus Dispatch reports officials in Obetz, which is less than 10 miles south of Columbus, will hold a news conference on Thursday to discuss the new stadium.

The plan is for Fortress Field to host professional lacrosse and rugby, with hopes that the venue will attract high school football playoffs and other events as well.

Officials with Major League Lacrosse’s Ohio Machine say the stadium will be the first in the country designed specifically for professional lacrosse.

The stadium will need to be completed before May to accommodate the first home match of the Ohio Aviators of Pro Rugby North America.
