Scripps College Alumnus Leads the E.W. Scripps Company in Analytics

Eric Duell has transitioned from a former photojournalist to be the Vice President of Analytics and Intelligence at the E. W. Scripps Company headquartered in Cincinnati.

He graduated from the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University and spent time as a photojournalist before he made a career transition.

Now, he works with data and analytics on two levels: 1) to tell stories of our times and 2) to help develop new media market opportunities for the Scripps company.

While visiting Scripps College for Scripps Day, Duell talked with WOUB and students about issues surrounding the understanding and use of “Big Data” from a business standpoint and for storytelling.

He also helped announce that The Social Media Analytics Research Team (SMART) Lab in the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University has entered into a partnership agreement with the Analytics and Intelligence Division of The E.W. Scripps Company.

The purpose behind this partnership is to strengthen and expand activities in analytics and social media between the E. W. Scripps Co., a private sector media company, and an academic division of a major university.

The partnership also involves the School of Media Arts and Studies in addition to the SMART Lab. Both are part of the Scripps College of Communication.
