SPENCER, W.Va. (AP) – A county commission has started the process of removing a West Virginia sheriff who took office this week over what a prosecutor says was the sheriff’s admission that he’s a meth addict.

Roane County Prosecutor Josh Downey says the commission passed a resolution Tuesday to start the formal process of removing Sheriff Bo Williams.

Williams was elected in November. He had been placed on leave as a Spencer police officer last month and later resigned after evidence went missing. State Police are investigating and no charges have been filed.

Downey says the allegations stem from Williams’ admission to him and others that he had removed methamphetamine from a case file and consumed it. Downey says Williams told him that he had been addicted to meth for more than a year.
