State Board Of Education Considers New Testing Methods

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The West Virginia Board of Education is considering a plan to replace the current Smarter Balanced assessments with end of course exams tied to a student’s final grade.
Media outlets report that the Board voted Wednesday to put out the end-of-course exams policy for public comment for the next 30 days.
The Smarter Balanced exams, which are aligned to the Common Core math and English language arts standards, don’t count toward students’ grades or graduation. State officials have said they are concerned about a lack of effort by high schoolers on the exams.
The end of course exams would affect students’ grades and their ability to graduate. They would be developed by West Virginia teachers and administrators.
If approved, exams will be fully implemented during the 2018-2019 school year.
