HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) – A high school teacher in Huntington has been fired over a series of social media posts that ridiculed blacks, Muslims and former President Barack Obama.

The Cabell County Board of Education voted Monday night to fire Mary Durstein, a social studies teacher at Huntington High School.

Durstein was suspended in January after disparaging comments made on her Twitter account were discovered. Students and residents who took screenshots of the comments brought them to the attention of the school district. School officials said Durstein later agreed to delete her Twitter account.

Some of Durstein’s comments dated to 2015.

Cabell County schools Superintendent Bill Smith had condemned Durstein’s actions, saying teachers “need to be cognizant of who they are speaking to.”
