CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice says he’s putting $100 million toward state employees’ public insurance plan and will ask the Legislature to give state workers a 5 percent pay raise.

News outlets report Justice made the announcement Tuesday, a day after revenue numbers indicated state collections were almost $120 million ahead of estimates during the first quarter of the budget year. Revenue collections in September were $452.9 million, or $54 million above estimate.

Justice used the news conference to credit fellow Republicans with providing the framework for economic growth.

After the news conference, some Democratic members of the Legislature called for a special session to put the pay raises into effect. Democrats have vowed to make the pay raise issue a central point during the November election.
