STEWART, Ohio – The Federal Hocking Lady Lancers have had troubles being a consistent team throughout the 2019-20 season. As the season has gone on, the trend has become apparent. The Lady Lancers are falling into the trend of winning.

Federal Hocking has now won their last three games; over Belpre, Wahama and Southern tonight, 58-38.

All season long, junior Paige Tolson has been the offensive weapon for Federal Hocking, but in the win over the Tornadoes, the spotlight was on Alexis Smith.

Smith finished with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals. A solid stat line in the big win. But for Smith, this game’s preparation wasn’t different than any other.

“My teammates and I go into the locker room and get prepared for the game,” Smith said. “In the first quarter, I shot my first three and made it. It kept me going.”

Smith’s energy was present from the tip, as she got the Lancers offense going as a three-point marksman. That three-point touch transferred to Kylie Tabler, as she hit three three-pointers on the night.

The game for the Lady Lancers wasn’t bright the whole time, however. A strong start in the first quarter was followed up by a sloppy second quarter.

“We gave up 17 or 19 points in the second quarter because they got a little happy we got some steals,” head coach Jeremy Tolson said. “We were getting in the passing lane, but then we started reaching and the fouls started to take over.”

For the Lady Lancers, the fouls did plague a key contributor to the team’s success. Paige Tolson picked up her fourth foul with under a minute to go in the third quarter, and she was limited throughout the fourth quarter.

Tolson was able to find other ways to be effective. She finished with 10 points, but also chipped in four assists, finding teammates when it mattered.

For Jeremy Tolson, any win is a team win.

“Some of the younger kids stepped up and did some of the little things,” Tolson said. “Brooklyn [Richards] had a nice game on the boards. Emma Beha also stepped up.”

The Lady Lancers will look to keep the horses moving as they head to Eastern on Thursday. As for now, they’ll enjoy the fruits of a sweet 58-38 victory over the Southern Lady Tornadoes.
