PBS NewsHour Explores Today’s China and its Relationship with the United States In July 8 Primetime Special

The primetime special PBS NewsHour Presents China: Power and Prosperity will premiere on PBS stations nationwide Wednesday, July 8, 2020, 10:00 – 11:00 p.m.

As the world continues to battle the deadly coronavirus pandemic, China and the United States are increasingly confrontational. Hosted by PBS NewsHour foreign affairs and defense correspondent Nick Schifrin, China: Power and Prosperity explores the future of the communist country’s relationship with the U.S., which will help determine the new international order, the dominant technology supporting the world’s communications infrastructure, and the global economy.

“We began reporting this series knowing that the relationship between China and the United States will have an outsized impact on the world in which we live. We did not know that a public health emergency would redefine how the two countries interact,” said James Blue, Executive-in-Charge of PBS NewsHour’s special programming. “China: Power and Prosperity takes an inside look at the emerging superpower’s reach, through its trade initiatives, technological advancements and the global vision of its most powerful leader since Mao, Xi Jinping.”

With support from PBS and The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, PBS NewsHour conducted more than 70 on-camera interviews for this program, with reporting from China, Malaysia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, and the United States. This special is an update to NewsHour’s ten-part series examining China’s contentious relationship with the United States that originally aired in Fall 2019.

In addition to its broadcast on PBS stations, the program will stream at pbs.org/newshour and pbs.org; on PBS NewsHour’s Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter; and on the PBS Video App (available on iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Smart TVs).
