63 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for Nov. 6 – 8

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 8,018 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 63 new cases were reported Saturday through Monday.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Nov. 8, 2021.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 33 people 0-19, 16 people 20-29, five people 40-49, four people 50-59, three people 30-39, a person 60-69 and a person 70-79.

“The high number of new cases includes some older cases that were transferred to Athens County from other jurisdictions,” according to a social media post from the Athens City-County Health Department.

Two additional cases required hospitalization involving a person 19 or younger and a person in their 50s. According to the data, 285 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 230 known active cases in the county as of Monday and 7,696 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 48.84% of the county has started the vaccination process and 45.88% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 5,223 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Monday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 1,575,319 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide after 3,122 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. There have been 81,183 hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
