It’s that time of year again! WOUB Culture has reached out to a variety of folks involved in various capacities with the music and arts throughout WOUB’s diverse coverage region to inquire: “what have you been listening to this year, my friend?” Find their answers on WOUB Culture all throughout the month of December.

“Cool, Dry Place” – Katy Kirby

Four out of five of my top songs on Spotify this year were from “Cool, Dry Place,” so I figured I should include the whole album on my recommendation list. Katy Kirby’s light vocals and nimble guitar parts are just so fun, I couldn’t stop playing it all on repeat. I recommend putting on this album on a bright, sunny morning.

“Imposter Syndrome” – Sidney Gish

The one non-Katy Kirby song that made it to my top five this year was this one from Sidney Gish. The lyrics in basically every Sidney Gish song are ridiculously endearing, but “Imposter Syndrome” takes the cake for me. I also always appreciate reminders that no one else feels like they know what they’re doing either.

“Be Your Own Muse” – Haley Blais

This song is so dreamy and gorgeous, and the lyrics are a punch in the gut in the best way. I love this song so much that I did a little cover of it on my Instagram a few months ago.

“BRAT” – NNAMDÏ

I started getting into NNAMDÏ a few years ago with his album, “DROOL,” but somewhere between that time and 2021, I switched streaming platforms and lost track of him. I’m so glad I found my way back to his music though because “BRAT” is such a wild ride of an album. I especially love “Glass Casket,” “Gimme Gimme,” and “Wasted.”

“Charity” – Courtney Barnett

I’m an instructor at the Stuart’s Opera House Afterschool Music Program, and I recently got to help one of the student bands record a cover of Courtney Barnett’s “Nameless, Faceless.” They did such an amazing job with it, and they really made me fall in love with Courtney Barnett’s sound (I know, it’s long overdue).
