97 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for Jan. 7

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 9,573 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 97 additional cases were reported Friday.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed numbers on Jan. 7, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 44 people 20-29, 16 people 30-39, 11 people 0-19, eight people 40-49, eight people 50-59, eight people 60-69, one person 70-79 and one person 80+.

There are 820 known active cases in the county as of Friday and 8,649 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.17% of the county has started the vaccination process and 48.60% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 14,606 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Friday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 19,563 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported in the last 24 hours. There were also 440hospitalizations, 51 ICU admissions and 398 deaths in the same time frame.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
